The T.E. Personal Cutaway

The Maton T.E. Personal is possibly the most significant guitar model to have been produced by Maton,

So when we looked at building this guitar with the Master Built team we had to make sure we completely understood how this guitar works and how we could produce it accurately and consistently. Most importantly, we had to please the master himself, Tommy Emmanuel!

The T.E. Personal needs to have a very even frequency response and needs to provide body and sustain on even the highest single notes. It also needs to operate at reasonably high amplified volume levels without producing unwanted frequencies but needs to sound rich and full acoustically, and, it needs to play perfectly with a low action…

This is achieved with a unique set of soundboard thickness and bracing dimensions. The bracing is “V” shaped as with the other Master Built models, but it is taller and has deeper scallops. The Maple bridge plate is wider than standard and the guitar has two transverse bars above the sound hole compared to the conventional one bar on all our other models. The soundboard and bracing is all AAA Sitka Spruce and is chosen for maximum stiffness. All of this provides a solid base for a bright, sustained treble, while the scallops open up the lower midrange of the guitar providing the overall balanced response needed by the Master!

The back, sides and neck are made from figured Queensland Maple and the fretboard and bridge are Indian Rosewood, which helps provide the lively response we are looking for.

The Walnut headstock veneer is inlaid with a mother-of-pearl Maton logo and the famous kangaroo at the top of the headstock.

The Redwood 808

With the introduction of the Redwood Series, Maton has found a new voice in the world of acoustic guitars.
There is something magical in the tone produced by the combination of the Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) soundboard and Tasmanian Myrtle (Nothofagus Cunninghamii) back and sides. The Redwood is plantation grown and sustainably harvested from the Otway Ranges in Victoria, the Myrtle from our longstanding supplier in Tasmania, who also provides us with the timber to build the Joe Robinson Signature model.
Tonally, Redwood can be compared to Western Red Cedar, but there is a stronger treble presence and dynamic response than typically found in Cedar. Tasmanian Myrtle (or Tassie Myrtle as we Aussies call it) has a smooth, Maple like tone, and when combined with Redwood seems to add a little extra warmth and sustain to the overall tone of the instrument.
The result is intriguing. The tone coming from these guitars is complex. All the frequencies we expect are present, but there is something more going on as well. The blend of overtones and the dynamic response to slight variations in playing technique, offer new possibilities to the player. This is a guitar that is hard to put down.

CW80 80th Anniversary 808

The CW80 80th Anniversary edition is a tribute to a guitar that has been a part of Australia’s musical landscape for as long as any of us can remember. From its humble beginnings in 1967 this affordable, quality guitar has probably been behind more great songs and performances than any other Australian acoustic guitar. It was always intended to be a reliable, robust workhorse for all guitar players, whether it be in the recording studio producing hit songs, on the road with a touring artist, at an open mic in a coffee shop or at home after a hard day’s work. The CW80 has been there for generations of musicians.

After a brief hiatus the CW80 has returned, this time to mark the 80th year of Maton guitars. The CW80 has a Figured Queensland Maple Neck, Fijian Mahogany back and sides, a Engelmann Spruce soundboard and an Indian Rosewood fingerboard and bridge. These are classic CW80 timbers and were used on the model from the late 1970s up to the mid-1990s, after which the neck back and sides changed to Queensland Maple. The binding is rock maple, a departure from the original plastic bindings.

The guitar is finished in a polished nitro cellulose finish and is stained in the traditional Maton colours from the CW80’s “golden era” from 1978 to 2000. It is equipped with Maton’s brilliant AP5 Pro pickup system and fitted with chrome Grover machine heads.

While the appearance of the CW80 80th Anniversary edition evokes Maton’s history, the tone of this guitar benefits from the great strides in acoustic tone achieved by Maton over recent years. Current bracing technology and careful material selection provide a full, rich dreadnought tone along with the clear top end presence required by today’s players.

Maton’s CW80 80th Anniversary edition is a guitar that honours a rich past, but has been designed to become a future classic”

SRS808

The Maton SRS808 incorporates solid Blackwood back and sides and a Spruce top.

A forward shifting of the X braces and the shifting of scallop peaks to nodal points around the soundboard help to enhance the vibration of the top. The shifting of the X braces also allowed the inclusion of a second, parallel tone bar which allows the scalloping of both tone bars, and spreads the load while reducing mass.

Adjusted bracing heights as well as a locked 15 foot radius for the arch of the back, gave us the plate resonance separation we were looking for between top and back. We now have the full, open, lower frequency response we were looking for as well as a crisp, well defined treble response.

The new 808 series sounds a whole lot bigger than a small bodied guitar should. We were hoping the end of this journey would produce a guitar that amazes the player at first strum, then continues to impress as each aspect of the sound of the guitar meets and surpasses the player’s expectation.

EBG808TE

If you’ve ever seen Tommy Emmanuel perform you will know he is one of the world’s greatest guitarists, and one of the most inspirational musicians on the planet.

It takes a great guitar to meet the demands of such a great player. Designed in conjunction with guitar great Tommy Emmanuel, the TE series guitars are an outstanding tribute to Tommy’s musicianship and Maton’s superior craftsmanship. Built to Tommy’s specifications, the TE series provides the huge tone and performance you would expect from a guitar bearing the name.

Tommy looks for a guitar with superb tone, capable of the most delicate expression as well as the most ferocious attack. The neck must stay true regardless of the rigours of international travel and the guitar needs to perform at its peak, from Rome, to Nashville, to Sydney.

Tommy has done Australia proud and we are honoured that he continues to use Maton as his guitar of choice.
